Depending on where you live in the US, you might have some very hard water running through your pipes.

What is hard water? It’s water that has a high mineral content, such as calcium and magnesium. While it’s not unhealthy to drink, it can clog your pipes and be tough on your skin and hair.

Understandably, if you have hard water, you might be wondering how to make it soft. Here’s a quick guide on how to improve the water quality in your home!

Get Faucet Aerators

These are very easy to install and affordable as well (they usually cost around $2 or less). Faucet aerators are basically little screens you put at the end of your faucets, which can help filter out contaminants.

All you have to do is buy a few and screw them onto your faucets. And if the screens ever get damaged, you don’t even have to replace the whole aerator. You can buy a new screen for 50 cents and replace it yourself!

Install a Water Conditioner

There are several of these products on the market, including the ScaleBlaster water conditioner. Those on the lower end of the spectrum cost just a few hundred dollars, which can be worth it when you can soften your water. These devices will descale your water so you don’t get that annoying white buildup as quickly.

Some will need a separate discharge line, but others won’t. So if you want an easy DIY job, opt for a water conditioner that doesn’t require a discharge line.

Some are also 100% maintenance-free, which means you won’t have to do anything to keep getting soft water! Consider these options if you’re too busy already.

Install a Whole House Water Filter

This might be costly, but it’ll be worth it when you get soft water that’s also free of contaminants and bacteria. When you have a system that’s filtering all the water running through your house, then you won’t have to worry about any of your faucets putting out dirty or hard water.

These filters can also balance the pH of your water and make it taste better. When it’s more palatable, your family members will hydrate themselves more!

If you can’t afford to get a whole house water filter, at least consider point-of-use (POU) filters. These are installed at single water outlets, which makes them a cost-effective solution.
