The American federal holiday known as Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus’ landing in the Americas in 1492. People celebrate Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. It coincides with Canadian Thanksgiving that year (meaning both countries have a public holiday on the same day, even if the two holidays are different). The disastrous effects of European colonization on native populations are the reason why the holiday is becoming more and more divisive. Thus, the event is not a celebrated in certain states, while other states commemorate it as Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. But when is Columbus Day 2022? Let’s find out here.

Since the time of the colonies, people have commemorated Columbus’s trip throughout the world. The adventurer, who was born in Italy, started in August 1492. By landing in the Bahamas instead of his original destination of China, India, and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia, he became the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland in the tenth century. In Colorado, Columbus Day was declared a state holiday in 1906. President Franklin D. Roosevelt then declared it a federal holiday in the United States in 1937.

In some Latino communities in the United States and Latin America, the day that Columbus first set foot in America is the Day of the Race (Da de la Raza) for the natives. Celebrations of Columbus Day in 2022 also spark debate because of the arrival of Europeans in the Americas. It also resulted in the deaths of a sizable section of the Native American population. It happened due to Columbus’ deeds.

A significant percentage of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas were lost as a result of the entrance of European settlers. Additionally, it has been suggested that Columbus shouldn’t be recognized for finding North America because he only ventured as far as a few Caribbean islands and never reached the continent’s interior.

Traditions of Columbus Day

On October 12, 2022, schools will typically teach students about Christopher Columbus and his explorations. Columbus Day 2022 has changed to become a national festival of Italian-American ancestry. Localities hold street fairs and parades with Italian food, music, and garish costumes. During this festival, many cities and towns that honor indigenous peoples host events including traditional dance performances and lessons on Native American culture.
