Removing Minor Scratches

1. Use warm water to clean out your sink. Fill your sink with a solution of warm water and liquid dish detergent while inserting the stopper into the drain. Wash your sink with a sponge in the water, paying close attention to any areas where oil and grime tend to collect.

2. Take out the stopper and let the water drain. To get rid of the suds, rinse the sink with clean water. Examine the sink and use a fresh sponge to go over any areas you might have missed. Note the locations of the scratches after drying the sink with a clean, lint-free towel.

3. Take a soft scouring pad and add a tiny amount of a liquid abrasive cleaning product to it. Make sure the cleaning agent is safe for use on stainless steel.

4. Rub over the scratches surrounding the sink area. If the stainless steel has a grain, rub in that direction while applying light pressure. Wipe the area clean from time to time to examine if the scrape is fading or has vanished. It might be essential to apply cleaning multiple times. Stop after you attain the desired outcome.

Removing Severe Scratches

1. To treat minor scratches, follow the directions in steps 1 and 2.

2. Attach a rubber sanding block to 1,000-grit sandpaper. Fill a little bucket with sterilized, warm water. Pour some water onto the sandpaper and submerge the sanding block in the bucket. Wet sand the scratched area while applying steady pressure. Rub in the direction of the grain, back and forth. Check the area frequently to see if the scratch is disappearing and frequently rewet the sanding block.

3. If there is no improvement, add 600-grit sandpaper to the rubber sanding block. Wet sanding should be done repeatedly until the scratch is gone.

4. To finish the process, repeat the techniques specified in steps 3 through 5 for small scratches.

Note: Don’t use steel wool pads for cleaning your stainless steel sink. The minute fibers of steel may break off the surface and lead to rust spots.
